Which OptiTrack cameras are capable of tracking outdoors, and how can they be optimized to do so?

Prime 41 cameras are capable of tracking outdoors in most motion capture applications. Other Prime Series cameras can also track outdoors in some circumstances. But because the outdoor tracking typically introduces a range penalty due to the strong ambient light interference, the potential capture volume produced by the setup is substantially reduced.

With 170 LEDs equipped in its ring array, the the Prime 41 camera provides the strongest illumination among all of the OptiTrack camera models. This allows tracking at very long distances, which is also beneficial for tracking in restricted settings.

Large retroreflective markers are recommended when tracking outdoors because it enhances the marker visibility. Moreover, Active LED markers can be used in place of passive reflective markers to increase range in outdoor applications, but only if proper steps are taken to configure the LEDs for optimal tracking.
