Troubleshooting: Ethernet Motion Capture Cameras and Network Setup

Authors list

Symptom: Cameras do not appear at all.

  • Is the MTU setting too low?

The MTU (Max Transmission Unit) of Windows should be configured to be at least 1500.  Anything less is not enough bandwidth for the motion capture data to pass through.  If you believe the MTU of Windows was changed and would like to check or change it, please Google "configure mtu windows" for advice.

  • Is Windows Firewall or anti-virus software on, and does it need to include an exception for OptiTrack software?

Please also turn off or add exceptions to the Windows Firefall and any anti-virus software you have installed for the OptiTrack motion capture software you are running.  If the Windows Firewalls or anti-virus software are turned on and there are no exceptions for the OptiTrack software, then  you may not be able to properly connect to the camera system.  The user may need to be logged in as a System Administrator in order to make these changes.  If you are a part of a company or university, it is advised to contact the IT department to make these changes.

Symptom: Cameras appear and disappear quickly, over and over in OptiTrack software.

  • Are multiple computers, or the company / school network plugged into the motion capture switch?

A motion capture system consisting of Prime series and S250e Ethernet based cameras need to be on an isolated network.  We recommend using the Intel EXPI9400PT PCI-Express, or similar Gigabit network card in your motion capture computer running OptiTrack software.  In setups where the user is streaming data out to another computer, they will do so over a second isolated network to other computers, or over their company or university network.  Having multiple computers connected to a motion capture system's switch or having the company or university network plugged into the motion capture system's switch is not supported and will likely cause communication interference between the motion capture cameras and the OptiTrack software.
