On which camera models can focus be adjusted, and how does it impact tracking?

All OptiTrack cameras (other than the V120:Duo and V120:Trio tracking bars) can be re-focused to optimize image clarity at any distance within the camera’s tracking range. By default, OptiTrack cameras are focused at infinity, which means that they are tuned to track from distances as near as a few feet away up to their maximum tracking range. For very close-up configurations (e.g. tracking markers from 1-4’ away from cameras), tracking quality can be improved by refocusing for clarity at that range.

A simple method for focusing OptiTrack cameras involves setting the camera in a grayscale video mode, increasing camera exposure to create the brightest possible image, and then placing reflective markers in the tracking volume that needs to be in-focus for your application. Then adjust the focus of each camera to capture the marker as clearly as possible.

How to adjust lens focus

  • Flex Series cameras can be focused by rotating the lens body, access to which can be gained by removing the case.

  • Prime 13 and Prime 13W cameras can be focused using custom focus tools to rotate the lens body, which can be purchased on OptiTrack’s Lens Accessories page.

  • Other Prime Series cameras can be focused by manually rotating the focus ring on the lens body, which can be accessed at the center of the camera. Once focus has been optimized, it should be locked down by tightening the set screw.

  • Slim Series cameras support multiple lens types, including third-party lenses, so focus techniques will vary. Refer to the lens type to determine how to proceed. (In general, M12 lenses will be focused by rotating the lens body, while C and CS lenses will be focused by rotating the focus ring.)

OptiTrack cameras featuring the Aim Assist button will set the video to grayscale mode and exposure value to its optimal setting for adjusting aim and focus with just one button click on the camera.
