How many markers can be tracked at once by an OptiTrack system?

The maximum number of markers that can be tracked varies substantially depending on the type of camera used, the capture volume settings, the speed of the host PC, and the number of cameras in the system. When capturing many markers, higher resolution cameras are beneficial to effectively distinguish individual markers in larger volumes. Motive has features to adjust camera settings and reconstruction settings that can help optimize the acquisition of higher marker counts in a variety of volume configurations.

In optical motion capture systems, it is important to note that data quality is directly related to marker visibility. Camera configuration, stage setup, and the number of actors or objects will affect the visibility of markers in the capture volume and thus influence the data continuity and quality.

OptiTrack manufactures a variety of motion capture camera systems that are suited to a number of different applications. The Build Your Own feature on our website will provide some guidelines to follow when selecting camera types and volume configurations.
