Can third-party lenses be used with OptiTrack cameras?

Flex Series

In order to ensure optimal performance, Flex Series lenses are specifically matched to both the camera’s imager and its LED array. Because of this, we recommend OptiTrack M12 lenses for use with Flex Series cameras. OptiTrack M12 lenses can be found on our webstore.

However, some third-party M12 lenses can be used in their place. Please consider the following when using third-party M12 lenses:

• The lens diameter must fit within the lens opening in the camera case. Lenses that are too large might not thread into the lens holder properly, or they might occlude the LED array, which can reduce illumination. Refer to the camera technical illustrations to determine whether a third-party lens will fit.

• Select an M12 lens with an image circle size that matches the size of the camera’s imager. A lens with too small of an image circle will reduce visibility on the edges of the imager.

• Similarly, very wide FOV lenses will have a problem with reduced illumination on the edges of the FOV frustum; in consequence, reducing the range to markers.

• OptiTrack lenses are specially treated to increase light transmission. Third-party lenses can have up to 40% less illuminance, which can impact the range to markers by an equal amount.

Prime Series

In order to ensure optimal performance in high-precision and long-range tracking applications, Prime Series lenses are specifically matched to both the camera’s imager and its LED array. Because of this, we do not support the use of third-party lenses with Prime Series cameras.
